A Grand Day Out

Series III Club Off Road Day At Pear Tree Farm, Lea Bridge
Organized by Dave Lowe

(Gromet was just a spectator, he does not really go in for extreme sports)

It was an excellent week end and members came from as far away as Cheltenham, Essex, Birmingham, Chesterfield, Loughborough, Nottingham, Derby and Staffordshire. Dave arranged for perfect weather, although he did have to conjure up a light shower to liven up the mud hole.

Ross has a truly mean machine.

It still carries 'Mad Dogs' initials.

Lamas

As seen from inside Tim's SIII we had a couple of Andean Lamas on the course.
Tim was one of the few to make a perfect circuit.

Another Lama
And Another Lama

Neil

The gap between these trees was 75mm each side.
Not easy in Neil's long wheel base.

Tim

This exciting drop was very quickly followed by a tight, slippery turn,
with a rock in the middle of the path

Hi Lift
Pushing it over

Rock 1 - Land Rover 0
The Hi Lift Jack was needed for this recovery.
This poor old Land Rover was stuck right on top of the rock,
damaging the oil seal on the transfer box.

Nice quiet run

One minute you are happily driving along . . .

One try too many
Dave didn't half get some stick

The next you are up to your axles in mud.
A quick tug from Tim and Dave is free again.

Field Repairs to Dave's Exhaust

Lowey's Exhaust got knocked off by that aforementioned rock. Terry, from Essex, got stuck in and carried out the field repairs using Dave's spare pipe.
Rock 2 - Land Rovers 0
It's not everyone carries a spare exhaust pipe around with them.

You can just see Gromet's trolley jack handle

You can just see Gromet's trolley jack handle, that jack has come in very handy on many occasion.
It was about now there was a terrible crashing sound
from the other side of the trees.
A Land Rover was obviously in real trouble.
We were all off in a flash, running to see what had happened.

The scenery was stunning but that was of little consequence to Richard.

It took a 5 meter section of the wall with it

His Land Rover went through a dry stone wall

The radiator survived intact
The indicator light bulb is OK

Luckily no one was hurt. Richard's Land Rover had made a bolt for freedom.
Everyone rallied round, that is one of the great things about the Series III club, the spirit of mutual cooperation.

The wall was completed just hours before this

Martin and Tim sorting out the tow rope.

It was a long way round

Dave walking alongside.

The camp site is still a long way off

At last they reached the bottom of the hill.
Richard's engine was still running but he will need new wings, bumper,
lights and new hangers welding onto his chassis.
